I installed a rooftop tent (folding one much like this yakima) this year and just to give my perspective: Little movement wobbling on the rtt when inside climbing up the ladder into the tent doesn't damage the car (not sure how it would?) the wind drag depends on speed and the design of your rtt. In my experience, below 80kmhr, it's barely noticeable (80% of my driving), maybe 5% to fuel consumption. Beyond 100kmhr is when I feel it is about 10%. Yes, having to pack up to drive the car can be a pain for some. For my use case, I rarely stay more than a night somewhere so it's fine for me. Size and storage is a pain so you'll need to plan it out. For us, we just have the rtt on for 6 months during our 'camping' season and then remove it to lie against a wall during the 'off' season. It can be cosy in the tent yes, but for us it is fine. Won't be the case for everyone. Insulation can be upgraded with a better air mattress. Often people get anti-condensation mats under their mattress to help with any kind of condensation. In our experience, it's all worked perfectly and we've felt no cold from below. For us, the appeal is a cosy, comfortable space off the ground while we spend time outdoors. Not everyone shares that appeal so perhaps why there are many who are passionately against them. I don't think I've ever seen it as universally appealing. I have plenty of experience camping in hiker tents, car camping tents and in the car itself. I would say our rtt setup is the most comfortable both physically and mentally. In the end, everyone is out camping to spend time in nature in their own way and as long as it's not affecting others, its all good.

Genuine question, honestly not trying to rile anybody because I see these on people’s roof racks everywhere… But, what is the appeal of a ‘rooftop’ tent vs something you just unfurl on the ground? My rationale: - movement wobbling around on top of a car - ladders, or climbing up a car (car damage) - massive wind drag, fuel consumption impact - having to pack up just to drive your car - size, storage - tent size limitation - insulation, cold air underneath (unsure?) Not trying to rip on it, and everyone’s use case is different, but I just don’t quite see the seemingly universal appeal…

you're completely right on every aspect, my only thing is snappy swampdogs and everything else that wants to eat me

Nice investigations. Where's a photo of it packed away? The Darche I got for $1,500 (thankyou OzB) is holding up
