Just looked up your router and its a WiFi 5 model so not really that old. Why have these become a security risk? Just because new firmware support has ended?

I have it as well, from the T-Mobile rebrand deal. I flashed it to use merlin, but that's out of date too. Seems like freshtomato is the go for custom firmwares now I don't think it's paranoid. The internet is a lot more dangerous than it was 20 years ago. There are swarms of bots constantly checking for openings, and when they find one they use their libraries of known exploits to get in.

just update it to asuswrt-merlin if you're that worried. it's still a perfectly fine router.
